WORK vs PLAY

AND THINK ABOUT THIS!

 1923, Who Was:

1. President of the largest steel company?

 2. President of the largest gas company?

 3.
President of the New York stock Exchange?

 4. Greatest wheat speculator?

 5. President of the Bank of International Settlement?

 6. Great Bear of Wall Street?

These men were considered some of the worlds most successful of
their days..

Now, 87 years later, the history book asks us, if we know what ultimately became of them..........

The Answers: 1. The president of the largest steel company.

 Charles Schwab,
died a pauper.

2. The president of the largest gas company,

 Edward Hopson,
went insane..

3. The president of the NYSE,

 Richard Whitney,
was released from prison
to die at home.

4. The greatest wheat speculator,

 Arthur Cooger,
died abroad, penniless.

5. The president of
 the Bank of International Settlement,
 shot himself.

6.
The Great Bear of Wall Street,

 Cosabee Livermore,

also committed suicide

However,

in that same year, 1923, the PGA Champion

and the winner of the most important golf tournament, the US Open, was

Gene Sarazen.

What became of him?

He played golf until he

was 92,

died in 1999 at the age of

95.

 He was financially secure

at the time of his death.

The Moral:

Screw work. Play golf.. or

PLAY period!!!!!!!

Here's something for you! The first part of this (plus a few more details) went around as early as the late 50's/early 60's (when I was about 7, I found an old mimeographed copy with our old photo albums that my father must have got at work at Christmas as it was decorated with holly and such and was even dated). I kept it and made typed copies and found one a while ago but lost it again - it's likely kicking around.

My son got me the Sony PRS300. I don't know what he paid - he got a reconditioned one from one of our discount electronics stores - I saw one online for $169. It's the basic model but I'm happy enough with it. There are touch versions as well. My employee has a Goco or something like that - it makes her happy too - I should have had her show me but I didn't think.

  5. Aw! I LOVE a story with a happy ending!

I was all ready to say that evidently, 1923 was NOT a year to be the head of anything...but I love your moral!

    Less work, more PLAY!

  6. Just goes to show truth is stranger than fiction and striving so hard for sucess just makes you fall harder.

Enjoying life and playing may not make you live longer but sure makes living worth it.

  7. So, my plan to be an utter failure in life, is a good thing? Right?

  8. Good point. I had to check up on Charles Schwab. I'd known he'd been the master mind of US Steel and Bethlehem, but didn't realize he lost a lot in the depression. When he died, he was no longer rich, but wasn't homeless either and still had a lot of shares of Bethlehem steel. I always wonder if there is a relationship between him and the finance company that bears the same name, but was started by a different Charles Schwab... I hope you had a good Memorial Day, we got a little rain and a lot of threatening thunderstorms that seemed to miss us

  10. Hi John

I've popped in from Kathryn's blog. I've red your profile and I liked it. Finally someone else who likes gospel music. I think Casting Crowns is the best. They have all these songs I can relate to.

I'll be your newest follower from today. :)
