BLACK WIDOW SPIDER

BLACK WIDOW SPIDER

EGG CASING WITH SEVERAL HUNDRED EGGS EACH. OLD SKIN SHED SHOWS SHE'S A GROWING--OR IS THAT HER HUSBAND??? THIS IS A COMMON MYTH BTW--MOST DO NOT EAT THEIR MATES.

CLOSEUP OF EACH EGG- THESE WILL NOT MAKE IT!!

THIS SPIDER APPEARS DEAD- AU CONTRAIRE--MERELY A PLOY! BUT YOU CAN SEE THE TELL-TALE  START OF THE ORANGE  HOUR GLASS  FIGURE ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE LARGE ABDOMEN.

THIS ONE IS NOT AS PERFECTLY SHAPED AS I'VE SEEN THEM BEFORE, AND IT CONTINUES UP THE BACK...I WONDER IF IT'S A MATURITY/AGE TYPE THING?

ALSO THIS LADY HAS ORANGE SPOTS ON THE BACK WHICH I'VE ONLY SEEN A COUPLE OF TIMES : STILL PLAYING DEAD???

OH!!!! SEE-SHE'S AWAKE AND MAKING HER ESCAPE!

COOL PATTERN ON BACK- USUALLY BRIGHT COLORED CRITTERS IN NATURE MEAN- STAY AWAY! *

BEAUTIFUL- ESPECIALLY SINCE SHE PROBABLY ATE HER HUSBAND AFTER MAKING THE EGGS! SHE NEEDS A SPADE! SEE PREVIOUS MARRIAGE POST!

HER BITE CAN PACK A WALLOP! WELL- NOT HERS- BEACUSE SHE WENT TO SPIDER LIMBO!

I DON'T LEAVE THESE AROUND THE HOUSE AS THEY CAN REALLY HURT PETS, AND POSSIBLY PEOPLE. YOU USUALLY HAVE TO PICK UP WOOD, OR TRASH WHERE THEY HIDE TO DISTURB THEM. THE EASIEST WAY TO IDENTIFY THEM IS BY THEIR WEB. SORRY I DIDN'T GET A PIC OF IT--BUT ONCE YOU'VE SEEN IT--JUST STAY AWAY!

SWEET DREAMS!
LOVE YOU ALL!

JMc

The southern black widow has the shiny, black, globular abdomen with the distinctive red hourglass on the underside.

    • * The northern black widow has a row of red spots down the middle of the upper surface of its abdomen and two crosswise bars on the undersurface. The markings can also be yellow or white, and the spider itself may be brown or have red legs.

WHY DO I HAVE A YANKEE SPIDER IN MY YARD???
  •
  • MARK DURFEEEEEEE- YOU BEEN LURKING AROUND MY HOUSE AGAIN???????

  1. This is fascinating!! You should be working for Animal Planet or National Geographic or something!

We have Black Widows and Brown Recluses, but I rarely see either. Just those old Wolf Spiders.

  2. Great Post! I stay away from all spiders - except to squish them. I found a gigantic spider (by out standards) in our yard - no idea what kind it was since our spiders are boring anyway.

  6. It's the praying mantis female that eats her (male) mate. Right after sex. Not kidding.

I love you, John, even if I have nightmares about black widows from the north, south, east or west.
