Buddy Guy - Skin Deep

WE ARE ALL THE SAME--BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS--WHEN YOU HAVE 4:22 SECONDS TO DEVOTE TO A POWERFUL SONG!!! TIME FOR THESE TRUTHFUL WORDS FROM A BLUES LEGEND, TO PENETRATE THE SKIN, AND BURROW INTO OUR HEART!

STORY HAS IT--"FROM HIS MOUTH"- IN AN INTERVIEW I HEARD ON THE 101-GUITAR SERIES....
HE RAN ACROSS IN FRONT OF HIS MOTHERS BROKEN MIRROR, WHILE SHE WAS COMBING HER HAIR AT ABOUT 15 0R 16 YEARS OLD, ON THE PLANTATION WHERE HE WAS RAISED!

AND COMMENTED  "I'M HANDSOME"!

HIS MOTHER REPLIED."YES SON, BUT IT'S ONLY SKIN DEEP!!""

THEN HE WROTE THIS SONG...

EVRYONE HERE IS VALUED, LOVED, AND RESPECTED...BECAUSE AFTER ALL:
WE ARE ONLY DIFFERENT:

SKIN DEEP !!

WE RARELY GET PAST THAT AREA! AND TRULY KNOW EACH OTHER!

  1. Good song - sounded very 70's to me.

I know there's discrimination here but not nearly to the extent that you've got it there - and I wonder is the south still the worst?

People will always gravitate toward people they see as "the same". But sometimes colour is not as huge an obstacle as it seems - it's the culture it represents as well. Here, we have more blacks from the Sudan or elsewhere in Africa than we do who were former slaves. They have issues to be sure as they come from troubled areas as a rule. New immigrants from troubled areas always tend to continue the same behaviours they did back home in order to survive but this society views them differently. I find that second generation immigrants tend to assimilate fairly well - keeping the positive traditions at home and following the crowd out in the world regardless of colour. Canada also has many programs to help immigrants adjust. Unfortunately, a people who have been in the country for hundreds of years wouldn't see the need, nor have the desire to assimilate to a large extent so what's happened in the States is that blacks have maintained their own separate culture and language idioms and don't want to assimilate. I can't say they are wrong exactly - they have every right to do what they want but in an organization, the best way to get ahead is to mimic the boss. Just the way it is.

However, the blacks have a large enough population that they can go far appealing just to their own if they are entrepreneurial so they may always have a parallel if unequal (I'm talking standard of living not actual) place in society - at least as long as they remain the poorest within the country. Obama did not get to be President by being culturally "black". Right?

  2. Brilliant Jeannie! And No, I don't think Obama was elected by being seen as Culturally Black. He was the Best choice we had!

    Phenomenal response Jeannie!

And YES, I think the South will probably always remain the "worst" for the very reasons you stated.

  6. Great song and comments. We are very lucky to have so much culture in music here. There is never a second without it and every type is around the corner. We have a long way to go before things will be "right" in the area of discrimination.

  7. I never see colour, in fact I don't see gender or age, just the person. A beautiful heart radiates out of any body whether it's young, old, large, small, black, white, male or female.

  8. Beautiful message and that song is a reminder that although we come in all shapes, colors and sizes we are more alike than different on the inside, where it counts. :)
