MY CONCRETE PLANTER
MY CONCRETE PLANTER IS WAITING ON SPRING.
SITTING COCKEYED AT A SLIGHT TILT,
THE EARTH USED TO BE A RICH ORGANIC SILT.
NOW IT'S A FIRE ANT BED AND BOY DO THEY STING,
I CAN'T GET NEAR IT TO PLANT ANYTHING!
I CAN'T WAIT TO GET RID OF THEM AND REPLANT SOMETHING THIS YEAR.
ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR A PLANTAR THIS DEAR?
FIRE ANT BED PLANTAR! GREAT FOR THE KIDS!!!!
I WAS THINKING OF USING THESE FOR SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY 2- SINCE IT IS CLOUDY AND GONNA RAIN!!!!
I USED TO HAVE SOME BEAUTIFUL HOSTA'S IN IT- BUT I TRANSPLANTED THEM UNDER A TREE AND PROMPTLY KILLED THEM.
NOTE TO SELF--LEAVE WELL, HEARTY THRIVING PLANTS ALONE-- SOMETHING IS WORKING!
THIS IS A HEAVY CONCRETE PLANTER THAT WE HAVE DRUG ALL OVER. IT WEIGHS ABOUT 40 LBS EMPTY AND AROUND 100 LBS. FULL OF GOOD SOIL. SHOULD I EMPTY AND REPAINT IT- OR JUST GET RID OF THE ANTS AND PLANT SUMPIN PURTY IN IT THIS SPRING?
LOVE YOU ALL!
JMc
My head started itching with just the thought of looking at photos of ants, but then they didn't come in for some reason, so there you go.
ReplyDeleteI think you should plant something purty in it. :) Dump those ants - I'm a pacifist by nature, but not about ants.
OK - now the pictures came in. Gah!
ReplyDeleteI love hostas but sadly ours got eaten ..... not by fire ants but by slugs which I'm sure are even worse. Ugh, horrible slimy things, yuk.
ReplyDeleteI love your planter - don't paint it!
ReplyDeleteI am the proud mama to some shamrocks now - I have my mother's houseplants.
Definitely get some new earth and ask at the nursery for some ideas - there might be a few you could put in there all at once that would look gorgeous.
AND, he's poet as well! :)
ReplyDeleteNO, don't paint it. The aged look adds character.
Plant something pretty and then we want to see!!
Lynn- The ants are going--they can hurt you! I'll just use 7 dust as it is pretty mild..it will just run them away!
ReplyDeleteSorry I made you itch, but those pustules they leave hurt!!
J
Tracy-- SALT!!! Also pour beer in a big plate/slash bowl--the Slugs will come to the beer- fall in and get so drunk they will drown! Seriously!
I hate Slugs!
J
Jeannie-- I agree--Iwant it back to the raw state and it has some beautiful etchings on it. I may try a neat color scheme. You think I should put the Shamrocks in it so they can get humongous- or will I kill them too?
Congrats on getting some!
Shamrocks that is: ;-)
J
Are you looking for suggestions on what to plant or how to get rid of the fire ants?
ReplyDeleteYou aren't kidding when you say those things HURT!!! I stuck my arm in a bale of hay once that was loaded with them. I quit counting the bites at 100! Even one of those on a toe is miserable.
We use Amdro (I think) and I'm not sure it kills them or just makes them move. Seems like we've tried everything from cornmeal to who know what. *sigh*
Yep, would be a good shadow shot. I took mine early in the week before the rains set in.
Kelly-- I burn each one with a Magnifying Glass with immense pleasure--LOL. I can get rid of the Ants-- Usually Diazinon granules will run them right off...but you know Boiling water does it too-LOL!
ReplyDeleteI'm more thinking of something to plant--and I'm taking ya'lls advice and am NOT going to paint it..I want it back au natural!
Have a good week....see ya mananananana...it's like Bananananan...I never know when to stop!
Hugs,
J
CARLETTA! Hiya friend--OK--Whatever I plant I will post as soon as it's presentable!!!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Hugs,
J
Great shots!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kay!!!!
ReplyDeleteJ
I wouldn't go near the ants, but that's me. I'm itching just thinking about it!
ReplyDeleteJohn we have all been there, done that to plants .. I don't even want to mention my mistakes .. hey, plant something awesome in it but move it to a place you will leave it for a long time (this sucker is HEAVY .. bad for your back .. don't do what I did to mine with pea gravel bags !!) .. so plant a stunning plant or plants and take lots of pictures ! This would have been a good SS too>
ReplyDeleteJoy ;-)
RK-- I hear ya gal! But aren't you talking about LICE! LOL.
ReplyDeleteHugs friend,
J
Joy--I'm gonna empt it, find a level perfect spot for it and leave it there! I
ll take some good shots. I have an idea as to what I'm gonna do! It should be very pretty!
Thanks as always for your awesome comments!
Have a great weekend.
J
Wonderful old planter you have there - minus the ants, of course. I'd never paint it. That texture is so rich and full of stories.
ReplyDeleteNyMaracas--You are sooo right! Thanks!! The Ants weren't hard to grow at all! ;-)
ReplyDeleteJ
Oh plant something! And I hope you were kidding when you said in the post above that you hurt your back moving it. Yikes. Dealing with fire ants is one of the downsides of being a transplanted Oregonian (now in Florida). Bugs! Nothing much kills 'em down here -- or in SC either I suspect.
ReplyDeleteSallie-- Fire ants and Mosquito's are two things I really wanna ask God about! LOL. And I barely tweaked my back--so I'm gonna leave it where it be!! Thanks so much for your comments!
